In 2005, Ross Hill Retirement Residence opened on Ross Park Drive in the heart of Ross Township in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. It is a 94 unit apartment building for independent living by seniors. The building is four stories, with lots of windows to create light and bright living spaces and contains a total of 95,500 square feet of living space.
Ross Hill is located on a five-acre site near many retail services. Although secluded from the commercial district, Ross Hill is situated just one half-mile from a shopping center with major grocery, pharmacies, restaurants and public transportation. In addition to the convenience of this local retail district, just minutes away is McKnight Road and a plethora of services and conveniences.
Each dwelling unit contains a full kitchen (including stove and refrigerator), complete bath, living/dining room and either one or two bedrooms. Apartments have carpeting in living and bedrooms and tile in kitchens and baths; mini-blinds are provided. Convenience bars are provided for safety at toilet and shower areas and there are emergency pull cords in each bath and bedroom. The common areas include a dining room, craft studio, library, multi-purpose area, hair care center, exercise room, game room, wellness center, laundry facilities, lounges and a media room. The outdoor patio provides a place to relax and a view of the landscaped areas, making Ross Hill “More Than Just A Place To Live”.
Through an Energy Harvest grant from the Department of Environmental Protection a solar thermal array was installed at Ross Hill Retirement Residence (the largest in western Pennsylvania). This solar array helps to keep affordable housing “affordable” by using energy from the sun to supplement natural gas water heaters and also helps to improve air quality. The building was sited to take advantage of the sun by orienting the long axis east to west as well as to maximize the views from the hilltop. The 1.74 million BTU day solar domestic hot water system will supplement a natural gas heating system and will heat 657,000 gallons of water annually.
